RaDime – Radar-Based Thickness Measurement for Steel Production

The precise measurement of strip thickness is a key determinant of quality, efficiency, and resource conservation in steel production. In many applications, systems based on X‑ray or isotope radiation are currently employed. However, these technologies are increasingly reaching their limits, for example due to restricted availability, rising safety requirements, or material‑related constraints on their use.

Within the RaDime project, a high‑precision radar-based measurement system for determining the thickness of steel strips is being developed that operates without the use of ionizing radiation. The objective is to provide a reliable and future-proof alternative to existing measurement techniques while ensuring high measurement accuracy and process stability. A central technological approach lies in the integration of a dual-band SiGe MMIC into a real-time capable multi-channel MIMO millimeter-wave system. This enables high-resolution thickness measurements with an accuracy of below 100 micrometres. At the same time, the high measurement speed allows for continuous monitoring of the production process.

To further enhance measurement quality, methods such as frequency band fusion, real-time data processing, and AI-assisted signal processing are employed. These techniques enable precise thickness determination even under varying geometric conditions and contribute to high robustness in industrial environments. In addition, the project includes the development of a digital twin of the measurement system. This digital representation of the production process allows for the simulation and analysis of different operating scenarios and supports both validation and continuous optimization of the measurement systems. By employing radar-based measurement technology, the project provides a safe, readily available, and more environmentally friendly solution for thickness measurement in rolling mills. At the same time, scrap can be reduced, energy consumption lowered, and consistently high product quality ensured.
