Radar and Sensor Technologies for

Modern Security Architectures

Modern security and defense systems require accurate situational awareness and robust sensor systems. The Fraunhofer Institute for High-Frequency Physics and Radar Technology FHR develops radar and sensor technologies for reconnaissance, surveillance and protection in air, land, and maritime environments.

Our research ranges from wide-area air surveillance and contributions to advanced air defense to the analysis of maritime signatures and key technologies for future military sensor systems. Government agencies, the armed forces, and industry partners benefit from application-oriented research, high-performance demonstrators, and technologies that can be integrated into operational systems.

Wide-Area air Surveillance and Networked Reconnaissance

The early detection and assessment of objects in airspace is a fundamental requirement for modern security architectures. To this end, Fraunhofer FHR develops radar and sensor systems that enable reliable detection, precise tracking, and robust classification of even small or hard-to-detect targets over long distances. A key focus is on networked systems in which manned and unmanned platforms, as well as distributed sensors, work together in a coordinated manner.

Innovative concepts such as passive radar, adaptive waveforms, and intelligent resource management enhance performance while reducing the radar signature. Experimental systems provide real-world data for development and validation. At the same time, we address electronic countermeasures and new threats such as highly dynamic missiles. Join us in developing scalable solutions for next-generation networked aerial reconnaissance.

Sensors for Ground-Based Defense and Drone Detection

Sensors for Ground-Based Defense and Drone Detection

The growing proliferation of small, low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles deployed in large numbers poses new challenges for ground-based defense systems. To address this, we develop radar technologies specifically tailored for these scenarios, which make a decisive contribution to the protection of critical infrastructure and operational areas. The focus is on early detection, reliable tracking, and precise classification of threats—even in complex and contested environments.

Modern signal processing and data‑driven methodologies enable highly accurate object classification and substantially reduce false alarms. This results in a reliable situational awareness picture for ground‑based systems, accelerating decision‑making processes and increasing the efficiency of countermeasure implementation. Our solutions follow a modular design approach and can be seamlessly integrated into existing security and defense architectures. Collaborate with us to advance high‑performance sensor technologies for robust and cost‑effective protection systems.

Signature Analysis and Wave Propagation in the Marine Environment

Complex propagation conditions and characteristic signatures determine the performance of sensor systems in the maritime environment. Fraunhofer FHR investigates the electromagnetic signatures of ships and maritime objects, as well as the propagation of radar waves over the sea and in coastal areas. The goal is to significantly improve detection and classification under real-world operational conditions.

High-precision measurement campaigns and simulation-based analyses provide reliable data for the development and evaluation of maritime sensor systems. Particular attention is paid to anomalous propagation effects, which significantly influence range and accuracy. These findings support both the design of new systems and their integration into networked defense architectures. Take advantage of our research expertise to implement customized, high-performance solutions for your maritime sensor and surveillance systems.
