Fraunhofer FHR develops innovative sensor systems for industrial applications and related fields, covering the entire value chain from sensor hardware to data-driven analysis. The portfolio comprises a broad range of system solutions and demonstrators for various sectors, including manufacturing, mobility, security, and infrastructure.
All systems meet high standards in terms of precision, reliability, and efficiency, and are tailored to specific operating conditions. They are continuously refined in close collaboration with industrial and research partners.
System Expertise and Technological Approaches (APECS)
Within the research field APECS (Advanced Packaging and Heterogeneous Integration for Electronic Components and Systems), the focus lies on the integration of complex electronic systems. Core topics include advanced packaging and interconnection technologies, as well as the integration of heterogeneous technologies at the system level.
The objective is to develop compact, high-performance, and reliable sensor systems through optimized system architectures. This approach goes beyond individual components and enables scalable solutions for a wide range of applications.
Applications and System Solutions
The technologies are implemented in concrete system solutions, ranging from material analysis and process monitoring to security and inspection applications. These systems span from specialized measurement devices to complex multi-sensor platforms tailored to different industrial sectors.
Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection
Radar and millimeter-wave technologies enable contactless, non-destructive testing without the use of ionizing radiation. Applications extend beyond quality assurance to include inspection, security-related applications, and structural analysis. Tomographic methods provide three-dimensional insights into materials, independent of the specific application scenario.

Terahertz Technology
Terahertz technologies significantly expand the capabilities of modern sensor systems. They enable high-resolution imaging as well as material-specific analysis, even for structures that are difficult to access or optically opaque. Typical application areas include material characterization, detection of concealed structures, security applications, and future communication and imaging systems. In this context, terahertz technologies complement radar and optical methods, particularly where these approaches reach their physical limits.
Activities within the Terahertz.NRW initiative primarily focus on research and technological development and are not limited exclusively to industrial production applications

Integration and Deployment of Sensor Systems
System development at Fraunhofer FHR also includes the systematic transfer of technologies into real-world applications. Integration requires adaptation to specific processes, environments, and interfaces, and is therefore carried out on a project-specific basis. Consequently, direct plug-and-play integration is generally not feasible; instead, implementation is part of a structured development and transfer process. Fraunhofer FHR supports this process from initial research to application-oriented deployment in close collaboration with partners.
