High‑Frequency and Radar Infrastructure of the Fraunhofer FHR

We possess a unique technical infrastructure for the development of state‑of‑the‑art electromagnetic sensor systems. This includes the TIRA space observation radar—one of its kind in Europe—facilities for advanced printed circuit board technologies, measurement capabilities extending into the terahertz range, several anechoic chambers, as well as mobile and airborne radar systems. This infrastructure enables research across the entire high‑frequency spectrum, from microwaves to sub‑millimeter precision applications, and supports partners from industry, government agencies, and academia in demanding development and validation tasks.

 

Measurement Facilities

The measurement facilities of Fraunhofer FHR enable high‑precision characterization of materials, antennas, and radar systems across a broad frequency range. Several anechoic chambers from UHF up to 400 GHz, specialized setups for dielectric material analysis up to 95 GHz, outdoor test ranges of up to 600 m, as well as heavy‑duty and precision positioners form a powerful infrastructure for validation activities and measurement campaigns.

 

Experimental Systems

Our experimental systems comprise a broad spectrum of ground‑based, airborne, and space‑based radar systems. Central installations include the TIRA space observation radar, which provides high‑resolution orbit and imaging data in low Earth orbit, as well as the phased‑array space surveillance radar GESTRA for rapid detection and tracking of diverse objects. Additional capabilities include mobile measurement vehicles, drone platforms, and airborne carriers.

 

High‑Frequency Technologies

We possess extensive expertise in the development and manufacturing of high‑frequency components. This includes chip technologies for frequencies reaching into the sub‑THz range, precise printed circuit board design and assembly, a modern, fully equipped workshop, as well as specialized manufacturing technologies such as laser processing and 3D printing—enabling rapid prototyping, highly integrated RF modules, and customized solutions for research and industry.
