Consortia, Competence Areas, and Alliances

The Fraunhofer FHR is broadly integrated within the Fraunhofer‑Gesellschaft and participates in several strategic consortia. Our institute is active in the Competence Area Defense and Security, in the Microelectronics Consortium, in the Space and Mobility Alliances, as well as in the Vision Business Unit—thereby contributing significantly to the advancement of key future technologies.

Competence Area Defense, Prevention and Security (VVS)

The VVS Competence Area consolidates the security‑relevant expertise of Fraunhofer institutes to protect people, society, and the state. It develops technologies and concepts that enable early detection of hazards, effective response to threats, and reduction of risks. The VVS supports national and international partners with application‑oriented solutions for defense and civil security, thereby strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructures.

Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD)

The Fraunhofer Microelectronics Group connects institutes working in micro‑ and nanoelectronics as well as microintegration and develops joint research and technology concepts. Together with two Leibniz institutes, it forms the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD), a one‑stop shop for technologies and system solutions. The central office in Berlin coordinates activities and supports partners from research, industry, and policy.

Fraunhofer AVIATION & SPACE brings together institutes conducting applied research for the aviation and space sectors. Its topics range from global mobility, environmental and climate monitoring to communication and security. With expertise in optics, sensing, communication, automation, and AI, Fraunhofer actively shapes the future of aerospace.

Vision Business Unit

The Vision Business Unit pools expertise in industrial image processing, machine vision, and optical measurement and inspection technologies. Its scope ranges from 3D metrology and surface inspection to thermography, X‑ray, ultrasound, and terahertz methods. Vision develops application‑specific turnkey solutions that can be directly integrated into production lines and promotes knowledge exchange through conferences, seminars, and joint trade fair appearances.

Mobility Alliance

The Fraunhofer Mobility Alliance brings together expertise for safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility. It develops technical and conceptual solutions for public and industrial clients and opens up new fields of application through close collaboration among the institutes. Five working groups—Automotive, Commercial Transport, People Mobility, Rail, and Waterborne—cover the full spectrum of modern mobility and strengthen innovation in the transport sector.
